Reluctantly Retired… But Not Really

A year and a half ago, I got laid off from my 9-to-5 job. It wasn’t a grand farewell party or a gold watch moment. It was more like a quiet message in my inbox that my position had been eliminated. Just like that, I was retired… sort of.

I had been working from home for years before the layoff, so there wasn’t a dramatic change to my routine—no last commute, no tearful packing of desk plants. But still, it was a shock to the system. I had always imagined “retirement” as something you plan for, not something that sneaks up on you while you're sipping coffee in yoga pants.

But here’s the thing: while I retired from my 9-to-5, I didn’t retire from working—or building income from home.

In fact, that unexpected layoff gave me the push I didn’t know I needed. I had already been dabbling in online income ideas, but suddenly I had the time and the motivation to take it seriously. And what I found was that I didn’t need another job. I needed a new mindset.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on this journey is that trading time for money is not the only way to make a living. You can build income streams that work for you, even when you're not actively “on the clock.” Have you heard the saying, “make money while you sleep?”
